Mroz Is Medalist At PNGA Junior Boys' PDF Print E-mail

Alex Mroz (16) of Woodinville, Wash. continued his solid play today during the second round of stroke play qualifying. A round of 2-under par-70 was enough to claim Medalist honors.

Mroz had a two round total of 7-under par-137 at the 54th PNGA Junior Boys’ Amateur Championship being held at Mill Creek Country Club in Mill Creek, Washington.

Mroz played his last ten holes at 5-under par after a rough start with three bogeys in the opening eight holes. Mroz will be the #1 seed heading into match play on Wednesday.

Matt Rawitzer (17) of Bellingham, Wash. followed up his opening round of 69 with a 2-under par-70 to claim the #2 seed with a two day total of 5-under par-139. Like Mroz, Rawitzer played the front nine at 2-over par-38 but finished the back nine with a bogey free, 4-under par-32.

Four other players in the 137 player field finished the 36-hole stroke play qualifying under par. They include Hank Frame (17) of Spokane, Wash. (140), Reid Martin (17) of Mukilteo, Wash. (140), Ricky McDonald (17) of Shoreline, Wash. (141) and 2007 Medalist, William Holdridge (17) of Bellingham, Wash. (142).

Seven players at 9-over par 153 had a playoff for the final five spots in the Championship Flight of 32. Bobby Monaco of Eugene, Ore, Kelly Campbell of Auburn, Wash., Tyler Collins of Federal Way, Wash., Kyle Hurt of Bainbridge Island, and Justin Haase of Spokane, Wash. were the successful five players to advance to the Championship Flight.

The championship consists of 36-holes of stroke play qualifying to determine flights for the match play portion of the championship. The lowest 32 scorers from the qualifying rounds advanced to the Championship Flight, with each of the remaining flights being comprised of eight contestants. All matches are single-elimination and contested over 18-holes.

To be eligible for the Pacific Northwest Junior Boys’ Amateur Championship, contestants must be 17 years of age or younger as of August 15th, and also carry a handicap index of 24.4 or less.
